Opportunity of a lifetime…backpacking Europe?

A friend of my Mom’s is inspired by my Photography. He is speechless from some of the photos I have taken, and how focused I am with photography at 19 years old. He wants me to alter my current career path (Firefighter – Paramedic) and send me to Europe for 1 month – 1 year, however long I want to capture the essence of culture, agriculture and nature. (France, Spain, Germany, Austria, England, Italy.) I will be sponsored by the company I shoot photos with, with the latest gear on the market to really excel.

I WANT TO BE A PHOTOGRAPHER, and am beginning to question becoming a Fireman.

The only thing is I am kind of afraid to go off and adventure alone, staying in hostile’s, leaving my girlfriend of 1 year. Any advice for me please would be very helpful.

Thank you all & God Bless!
The company (will not say) will provide me all of their current gear on the market to use for free on loan.

Traveling alone is NOT dangerous.
You will have to be a bit more careful than people who travel with a partner, but not all that much.

The place to stay when traveling alone is called Hostel, not hostile. If you can pay for it, you can get a room for yourself in most hostels, while still having the advantages of hostels, using the common kitchens, meeting the others who are also traveling alone, so you can do things together.
If you choose to stay in the dorms, it is like staying at a friends place and sharing a bedroom, often lots of fun, easy talking with others but at times a bit anoying.

As you will travel with expensive gear, you will have to be able to lock it away safe when you leave the dorm to use the bathroom. A camera bag/case that can be locked and can be locked to the frame of a bed would be great, using the lockers offered by the hostels better.

If you really want to become a traveling professional photographer you will have to get used to traveling alone. And if you travel with others who are not as dedicated to taking photos, you will find them getting very impatient. You might want to wait a while, hours if needed, to get that one building in the best light, or even just without all those anoying cars and tourists, most tourist just want to get a snap and be done with it.

But in my opinion, if you think you will not want to go on with your carreer, that this chance.
If in doubt, talk with the officers at the firefighting unit about a long leave, like two months, so you can return if you feel you should nor really stop.
